A would-be bank robber was thwarted when the teller at a downtown bank refused to hand over cash after receiving a demand note, police said.

The suspect, described as a man in his 50s, attempted to pull off the heist just before 5 p.m. Tuesday at the U.S. Bank branch at 600 West Broadway, said San Diego police officer John Buttle.

He walked into the branch and handed over a note demanding money.

“The clerk took the note, looked at the suspect and said ‘no’,” Buttle said. “The suspect turned and walked out the door without obtaining anything.”

Robbery detectives were investigating the incident.
