Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Peter Amewu, has reacted to the 3-day ultimatum given by the Small Scale Miners Association to government to allow them to return to site or take to the streets.

The request of the Association follows a temporary six-month moratorium on small scale mining activities and the suspension of licenses for six-months to deal with the challenges of galamsey.

The Small Scale Miners Association at a news conference in Kumasi said government’s stand now will affect the livelihood of members, arguing that they are not involved in illegal mining.

Reacting, Mr. Amewu stated again that government is not against small scale mining, but needs to streamline activities of the industry to reverse the calamity of environmental degradation.

He described the ultimatum by the small scale miners as unfortunate and says he will engage with them and get them to understand the devastation mining has caused to the country's water bodies.
