More than three thousand prisoners are believed to have broken jail from the main prison in DR Congo.

Authorities say only about 50 prisoners got away when armed men attacked the prison on Wednesday, adding that dozens of people were killed during the attack on Makala prison.

Leader of the political-religious sect Bundu Dia Kongo, Ne Muanda Nsemi, is among those who escaped.

A police spokesperson described the prisoners as dangerous, and urged the public to volunteer information on their whereabouts.
