Eleven people are reported killed as Nigerian troops battled Boko Haram suicide bombers and fighters to repel an attack on the outskirts of the North Eastern city of Maiduguri.

Eye witnesses say nine suicide bombers and two civilians died in the attack.

It is the fiercest attack in months by Boko Haram on the city that is the birthplace of the Islamic insurgency.

Police say three female suicide bombers detonated bombs near vehicles parked at a truck station around midnight.The seven-year Islamic uprising has killed more than 20 thousand people.
